Fertility Investigations

offers a full spectrum of fertility management.  This starts from a detailed history and examination of the couple, and it is important that both the male and female attend the consultation.  Investigations for infertility includes tests for both the female and male partner.

The Female Partner

Test for Patency of the Fallopian Tubes

Two common ways to test for blockage of the Fallopian Tubes include:

Hysterosalpingogram (HSG)

This is a special x-ray test where contrast is injected via a tube inserted through the cervix.  The advantage of this test is that it is less invasive than surgery with laparoscopy.

Laparoscopy (Dye Studies)

For some women who may have concurrent diseases such as endometriosis or pelvic adhesions, it may be better to perform a laparoscopy (keyhole surgery) as part of the infertility investigation, as it allows not only the opportunity to test the patency of the Fallopian tubes, but also allows the opportunity for the endometriosis or adhesions to be removed surgically.

Blood Tests

Blood tests will depend on findings from the history and physical examination.  This will be arranged at your first consultation.  This includes a hormonal profile, and a blood test to check for signs of ovulation.  A blood test to check the level of Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH) is also useful to give an indication of your “Ovarian Reserves”.  Screening tests will also be performed as part of your pre-conception workup.

Pelvic Ultrasound

A Pelvic Ultrasound scan is important to look for abnormalites of the ovaries (e.g. ovarian cysts, endometrioma, polycystic ovaries), and to look for any structural anomalies within the uterus (e.g. septum, fibroids).

The Male Partner

A semen analysis is required to look for male factor infertility.  Dr Law can arrange this for you at Care Fertility, located conveniently at Greenslpes Private.

Depending on the results, Dr Law may order some blood tests for the male partner.

To discuss your specific concerns and fertility issues, please contact Dr Ken Law to arrange an appointment at Greenslopes Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

A referral from your GP or gynaecologist is required in order to obtain the Medicare rebates for consultations.
